PTA Host Families Needed
Have you ever been “new” somewhere? Were you “new” to your school? “New” on a sports team? “New” in your neighborhood or at your place of employment? Anyone who has ever been in that position, knows how it feels and how much a kind word, smile, or effort is appreciated! Please help our “new families” at West Maple to feel welcome!
The New Family Committee was created so that new families will have a “Host” (or veteran) family to contact throughout this school year. Often, our new parents have questions about our school, the district, or the community.
West Maple will be hosting a dinner at our school on Friday, October 11, 2013 at 6:00pm. It will take place at our school. Ideally, we would like host families to attend and to participate in a casual meal, during which the families become acquainted and the children can socialize. This is a one-time event and would last up to 2 hours. Once the event is over, we would ask that you remain available (whether through email or phone) to answer questions throughout the remainder of the school year.
We are fortunate to have so many new families at our school. In order for this event to run successfully, we will need several host families.
If you are interested in helping our new families to feel welcome at our school, please let me know by Wednesday, October 2nd. If you would like to be a host family, but are unable to attend the dinner, please still consider participating! You can volunteer by contacting me, or by going to www.SignUpGenius.com/go/5080B45A4A922A02-20132014. to register as a volunteer. Please specify if you are bilingual and which language(s) you speak. We have several families for whom English is a second language.
Thanks, in advance, for helping to make this a success!

West Maple Elementary School PTA
Welcome to the 2013-2014 school year. We have a very exciting and important year ahead of us. The PTA provides resources to help our children grow and learn in and out of the classrooms. We have many programs planned throughout the year to provide additional educational and social learning opportunities.
Please click on Events to see events by month. There will be a Signup Genius created to volunteer for what you find interesting and where you think your time and talents are best spent. We are asking ALL parents, working or non, to donate a few hours of time this year. We have opportunities in Services we provide, Legislative committee, Wellness events, school sponsored/PTA supported events as well as in the classrooms. We can not do it without all of your support.
NEW this year!
* Welcome back School Carnival in September. This event will replace our annual School Fair that typically takes place in June.
AGAIN this year
* The PTA invested in software that will automate our school directory last year. You will need to go on-line to enter your family data or if you participated last year, you will only need to update your information. At a minimum, everyone needs to update their students class information.
Use this link to enter your data:
Back again this year:
* Due to the overwhelming success, we are offering parents, and the community, an
opportunity to advertise their businesses in the school directory. Please see details in your
welcome back packet and under Forms.
* There is also an opportunity to advertise on our Fun Run t-shirts in the Spring. Don't miss
out on having your logo on 550+ t-shirts!
We will have fundraisers this year, but very few.
* Our membership campaign in September is not only a fundraiser to run our operational
budget, but $5.50 goes to the Michigan PTA and National PTA to support child advocacy.
* The plant sale in May is just a great service to our community and a great green
fundraiser.
* The Welcome back Carnival will be our largest fundraiser of the year. Supplementing our
operational budget from the funds collected in September.
We encourage you to click on the Budget link above to see how responsibly your funds were spent in 2011-2012 and 2012-2013. We provided over $51,000 to our school last year in iPads, teacher grants, assemblies and many other items our school and students needed.
Lastly we have many social events, typically one big event per grade and several school-wide. These events typically pay for themselves and may raise a little extra money, but the intent is to create community among our students and the parents. We all strive to make West Maple Elementary School a comfortable and safe environment for all. It's where we want our students to build lifelong memories with their friends and families.
Sincerely,
Your West Maple PTA Executive Committee

Character Education
We are proud to announce that West Maple has recently been selected as a 2012 State of Michigan School of Character. Our application for this award was based on the work done by the Character Education team and all of the staff here at the school. Some of this work includes the Paws Prints that each classroom is using to leave evidence of their good character around the school, the Peacemakers student group, and the family values posters.
Being selected as a State School of Character means that our application has been forwarded to the Character Education Partnership in Washington, D.C. for consideration in the National Schools of Character program. We will find out our status later on this winter.
Thanks to the following people on the Character Education team for their work on this applicaton and with the students and staff: Parents-Mrs. Ben-Ezra, Mrs. DeMarco, Mrs. Ersher, Staff-Mrs. Broz, Mrs. Davis, Mrs. Giles, Mrs. Kreyger, Mrs. Lane, Mrs. Mahler, Mrs. Merrell, Mr. Mitevski, Mr. Pesamoska, Mrs. Romig, Mrs. Whitfield
