Reflections 2012-2013
THE MAGIC OF A MOMENT
PTA REFLECTIONS CONTEST 2012 -2013
Student Flyer Abridged Rules Student Entry Form
What’s this contest about?
The PTA Reflections Program was founded back in 1969 by then Colorado PTA president Mary Lou Anderson, to create an avenue of expression for students in the form of an annual contest where entrants receive positive recognition for their artistic efforts. This year’s theme is “The Magic of a moment…” and students, pre-k through grade 12, are invited to use their creative talents to design and submit a work of art that addresses this theme in any of the following six categories:
Literature Visual Arts
Dance Choreography Film Production
Musical Composition Photography
* Special Artist Division (new this year)
Students submit their creation to their West Maple PTA by or before November 19, 2012. Works are judged on the local level and winning entries advance to the state level, where some are selected to compete on the national level. Entries must be aligned with general student participation rules as well as rules for each category. Students can enter more than one category and/or more than one entry per category—however, every entry must be submitted with its own entry form.
How can my student benefit?
Just by entering, your child will receive recognition on the school level with their name posted on the PTA Reflections Bulletin Board and in the school newsletter; their photo in the Reflections section of the annual yearbook; their name announced during an am West Maple broadcast; and each entrant receives an invitation to the Reflections End-of-the-Year Party where all receive a certificate and are eligible to win raffled prizes.
If their entry moves on in December to compete on the state level, your student receives a certificate. Entrants who win at State attend the state and district receptions held in the spring, where a host of awards are given. Their name would appear in the district and school newsletters and any awards won at this level are recognized on future college applications.
If their entry moves on in March to compete on the national level, your child would receive a trophy from West Maple and would be recognized on all levels with ribbons and certificates. And if the entry wins at nationals in May, they win a monetary prize and a trip to the national reception held in Cincinnati, OH during the summer of 2013.
How do we get started?
Entries are available on-line at www.ptareflections.org or, for more information, contact West Maple PTA Reflections Chairperson Jackie Drake (248) 432-7249 or email [email protected].

Help Wanted:
The PTA Reflections Program is looking for parents who value the arts and want to inspire students to think creatively. We need volunteers who can work from home and others who can help out at school. All are welcome and will find this effort very rewarding.
The national PTSA sponsors a themed contest each year that students from pre-K through grade 12 can enter in six categories (literature, visual arts, film production, music composition, dance choreography, and photography). This year, entries will answer the statement, “Diversity means…”
PTA Reflections Program volunteers help to motivate West Maple students; run the program at the school-wide level; supervise the judging process; review and deliver entries for state competition; and coordinate the year-end West Maple party.
